Our volunteers have copied and indexed our local newspapers for items of interest to genealogists and we are now putting the obituary indexes on this site starting with 1900. The hard copies of the indexed newspaper are in books by year in our genealogy section. If you don't find the person with whom you are interested and know that he/she died in Chemung County, you should still check the newspaper microfilm available at our library. You will also want to check the microfilm of the newspaper to be sure you have the obituary with the most information as we have listed the deceased person the first time he is mentioned in the newspaper. If you are unable to come to the library, we answer genealogy research requests by mail for a fee. To submit a research query, click here.
Once you have opened the PDF, you can do a keyword search by clicking Ctrl+F and typing the last or first name into the "find" box that will appear in the upper right hand corner. If you are unsure of the name spelling, you can browse the file alphabetically. Click here for video demonstration.
