Chemung County Library District is participating in Geek the Library, a community‐based public awareness campaign. The campaign highlights what people are passionate about and how libraries can support them. One of the goals of the campaign is to heighten awareness of the value of public libraries and the critical funding issues they face.
Join us at our Geek the Library CCLD launch party for snacks and swag on Tuesday, July 23rd at 6pm and stay for the Emerald Isle Irish Band concert at 7pm, part of our Friends’ Summer Concert series. CCLD will also be at Wisner Market in downtown Elmira on July 11, 18, and August 1.

Adult Summer Reading
Chemung County Library District will again be hosting an Adult Summer Reading Program this year using the New York State theme Groundbreaking Reads. Interested patrons may register on our website or at any CCLD library beginning Monday, July 1st. The intention of the program is for adults to share their love of reading with each other. They can report how many books they’ve read, submit book reviews, rate their reads and comment on other reviews. Participants will be eligible for weekly prize drawings and grand prizes (Kindle Fire) will be awarded to a participant from each branch location. The District-wide event will culminate on Monday, August 12th with a performance of I am Zelda. Each branch library will offer a special adult program to coincide with the Reading Club.

Youth Summer Reading
Summer Reading Club is a 6 week family program with free and entertaining events every week with a special rewards program for those who read throughout the summer. Those that participate in the reading portion of the Reading Club will be invited to an exclusive party at Eldridge Park at the end of the program.
Come join your local branch of CCLD for our Summer Reading Club events! This year's theme is "Dig Into Reading". Mark your calendars and come on out! We have too many events planned to list them all here but make sure to check out our district calendar to see everything that is going on at your favorite branch.
Friends’ Summer Concerts
The 2nd Annual Summer Concert series gets underway in July on the Elmira Promenade, outside of the Central Library.
Concerts will begin at 7:00pm.

July 9th – Three Finger Leroy (jazz)
July 16th – Souk: Middle Eastern Grooves
July 23rd - Emerald Isle Irish Band
July 30th – The Hepcats (big band sounds)
August 6th – Still Kickin’ (rock and roll)
Bring your family, friends and comfortable chairs. There’s no better way to spend a warm summer evening. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be held inside the library.
These free programs are made possible through a generous contribution from the Friends of the Chemung County Library District.
Along with our exciting Summer Reading Club, we would like to spotlight a special event in July for teens. The library will be hosting a Teen Film Festival with a theme “Beneath the Surface” to coincide with our teen Summer Reading Club theme. This is an excellent opportunity for local teens to showcase their talent and win a cash prize. Stop in CCLD Big Flats branch or click here for for rules and entry forms. Good Luck to All!

Bookmobile will be off the road the week of July 1-5th. The summer schedule will begin on Monday, July 8th. In addition to its regular stops, the Bookmobile will spend the summer visiting various park programs and summer cohesion sites. On Tuesday, July 9th, two special guests will be accompanying the Bookmobile on the road. Nels Ross will present “In Jest” at Goodwin Park at 9:15am, Chapel Park at 9:45am, and Draxler Park at 10:15am. Later that afternoon at 3:00pm, the Madcap Puppets will present “The Cinderella Files” at the Southside Community Center. Mark your calendars and meet up with Bookmobile for these fun, family oriented events.
Central Library (Elmira)
CCLD’s Adult & Reference Services department, located on the second floor of the Central Branch, is pleased to announce a new monthly column called Beneficial Bits n’ Bytes. This blog column will feature brief articles about reference services, research in the electronic world, and other topics related to reference or genealogical research. Thus far we have published 2 articles. The first article published in mid-May is about using YouTube as a research tool. How to Draw Comics
Teens ages 13-18 sign up for this free, 2-part workshop series for beginners on How to Draw Comics! Come to both workshops: Tuesdays July 2 and July 9 @ 6-7pm. Corning professional comic artist Emily Swan will share her skills & knowledge. Art supplies will be provided. REGISTRATION is required, class size is limited. Teen hang out Time, every Tuesday @ 6pm, Central Branch
Teens! Stop by the auditorium of the Central Branch (Steele Memorial Library) for music, food, wii games, teen program brainstorming, art, and more! Bring your friends, eat, hangout, have fun! Bring your laptops, tablets, iPods, or phones to connect to our free Wi-Fi. Come and go as you please from 6pm to 7:30pm. No adults allowed without a teen escort, except teen librarian, Doris Jean! :)
July 1 is the first day for sign-ups for the Summer Reading Club...this year’s theme, Dig Into Reading, will bring a host of family friendly and fun programs at Central Library. Kick off the fun with the high energy Improv for Kids, on Wednesday, July 3 at 3:00. Thursday, July 11 at 6:00 p.m In Jest features magic, juggling and fun! Thursday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m. join artist Paul Merklein as he draws dynamic Great Big Faces...will you be picked? Thursday, July 25 at 3:00, Let’s get Digging at our fun digging stations. Thursday, August 1 at 3:30 Tom Sieling presents “Howl at the Moon” and Thursday, August 8 at 3:30 Come party with Elephant and Piggie! All participants will get invited to a special party for their reading efforts. Also, in July and August come to storytime at Wisner Park at 11:00.

A program for adults is being presented on July 29 at 6pm: Horseheads: A History, by Horseheads historian Joan O'Dell. Come learn the local history of Horseheads!
Jacie is enjoying the new kids’ seating at Van Etten Library. The new rocker game chairs were purchased with a generous donation from a Van Etten Library patron family.
The weekly Be Creative group is meeting on Fridays @ 1pm in the summer! Stop by this open studio session to work on your creative project, improve your fine arts skills with local artist Faye Crance, and make new friends! Teens and adults welcome. All kinds of artists welcome: painting, drawing, origami, sewing, jewelry making & more! Bring your own project and materials.

Join West Elmira Library for our 2013 Summer Reading Club kickoff on Tuesday July 2nd! Professional theatre group, Improv 4 Kids! will be performing. Stop by on Tuesday, July 9th, to see In Jest defying gravity and spreading joy. Paul Merklein will be drawing Great Big Super Hero Faces using some of the crowd as models on Tuesday July 16th. After this event, at 4 PM there will be a workshop for teens (12 and older) on "How to Draw Great Big Faces". These events all begin at 3 PM but please arrive by 2:30 so you have the opportunity to sign up, update reading records, and dig for your weekly prize.
Please note that the deadline for the Teen Photo Contest has been extended to July 8th due to regents and testing. Let us see your interpretation of the teen Summer Reading Club theme, "Beneath the Surface".
